Northern Lights 1×1
(1988 Northern Lights #1 x 1985 Northern Lights #1)
From our breeder, Rob:
“Besides NL#5, no other strain or line has had as much influence on my work, and ultimately, the work at Deep Ellum, as Northern Lights #1 has.
I received seeds of NL#1 in 1997 in Dallas, Texas. They were a few generations inbred off of the 1988 F3 release and they were a complete and total game-changer for me. NL#1 was absolutely a key building block for me, especially at the turn of the century, and I got to know the line very well. So much so, that still, to this day, NL#1 remains THE go-to line that I use when I want to see what an unfamiliar plant will throw. I held it as a breeding line for over two decades; outcrossing, as well as, continuing to inbreed it on itself, before I released pure seeds.
In 2019, I released pure 1988 NL#1 seeds for the first time since acquiring the seed-line, as part of Deep Ellum’s 20th anniversary. It was a small run, however, a few packs of those seeds made their way to some of my contemporaries who made hybrids themselves. The most notable that were created using our NL#1 line were the ACC 3-way, Northern Lites #1 and even one called a Purest Indica. We’re honored that these other breeders would choose to work with our genes.
NL#1 was a one-off, one-time release for us; a rare treat in celebration the label’s 20th anniversary. So, while others worked with our NL#1 line, we shifted focus to other projects. By the Fall of 2022, the emails and messages demanding more NL#1 seeds from us had become too great to ignore and I began efforts to add this strain back into the lineup.
I wanted to do something a little different for this release. Rather than simply continue my ’88 line as I did in 2019, and since other breeders had been working with it anyway, I chose instead to blend in another NL#1 into our’88 line from Dallas.”
After two years of testing other NL#1’s on their own and against our ’88 line, we realized that most were simply re-hashed versions of our 2019 release. Eventually we found the perfect (and verified) match, in the form of our good friend’s, AK Bean Brains, NL#1 line from 1985.
AK’s line pre-dates ours, and is more like a bush with medium-to-narrow leaves, as opposed to our line which is mainly columnar with wider leaves.
Both our ’88 Dallas line and AK’s line from ’85 have been inbred separately for decades. They are true, and when these two lines are combined, the result is vigorous offspring with textbook Northern Lights traits.
Deep Ellum Seeds is delighted to present our interpretation of perhaps Nevil’s most influential creation, the Northern Lights #1.
