Northern Lights
We are proud to present our interpretations of perhaps the most influential family in the history of New World genetics: Northern Lights.
At Deep Ellum Seeds, we view all the Northern Lights lines with incredible reverence and we take great pride in preserving all the Northern Lights lines that we’re lucky enough to maintain as pure, inbred lines. Although we believe that it is imperative to keep the numbers separate, even Nevil himself remarked that NL hybrids performed better than the pure inbred lines. Based on our own experiences, Nevil was correct. Therefore, we offer NL Hybrids as well as pure lines.
From our breeder, Rob: “The first time I had the pleasure of experiencing Northern Lights was in 1994. Up until that point, all I had ever seen was commercial brick (rightly) so it blew my mind. My obsession with Northern Lights was born and it instantly became the benchmark of which I judged all other strains. I spent the next few years trying to track down the source. In 1997, I was blessed with seeds of Northern Lights #1 and #5. These two strains had such a profound effect on me and were the catalyst that set me down the path to becoming a breeder. Up until that point, I was growing bag seed, mainly equatorial sativas and kind bud.
Northern Lights was a game-changer for me. I crossed them to the other sativas that I had and that was it. I instantly knew what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to be a breeder and create something as incredible as Northern Lights is.
I began to work the lines that I had created and spent hours at the library and on forums like Cannabis.com and Overgrow, soaking up every bit of breeding info that I could find.
A couple of years later, I founded my first seed company. It was the NL1 and NL5 lines that laid the foundation and formed the building blocks. NL5 was a major influence; my flagship strain was even a heavy NL5 cross (NL5/Ak-47, double BX to the NL5). In 2002, I picked up Northern Lights #2 but I closed down in 2004, before I was able to release seeds. I continued, however, to breed and preserve the Northern Lights lines.
When I joined Deep Ellum as the breeder ten years later, I brought these sacred genetics along with me.
In 2019, as part of Deep Ellum’s 20’th anniversary, I released a small batch of 88NL#1, 88NL#2 and 89 NL 5×2 seeds.
In 2021, I took over the company and I doubled my efforts in the NL arena and have continued to preserve the NL lines, keeping the numbers separate to retain their individual integrity, as well as creating new Northern Lights hybrids.
The family of Northern Lights lines have not only been extremely influential in my work during the last 3 decades, but to the entire cannabis community. Virtually everything that you see today, has Northern Lights in it somewhere down the line.
Words cannot express how humbled I am to be able to share these sacred genes with you.” – Rob
